Silverton Block Watch Association

Report a Crime

Welcome to the Silverton Block Watch Association information page.  The Association's mission is to provide another set of eyes and ears to the police department in its efforts to fight and prevent crime.  Meetings take place the last Monday of the month at 7:00 pm.  Locations vary month-to-month, thereby providing businesses with the opportunity to act as the host.  Past hosts include Meier's Winery, Benken's Florist, HD Beans and the Deer Park - Silverton Joint Fire District.  A monthly newsletter is produced and distributed at meetings and to the business community.  Copies of the newsletter can be picked up in the lobby of the Silverton Municipal Building.  A door prize is awarded at the end of each meeting.

History
Mayor Richard Hunter and Police Chief William Eggers founded the Silverton Block Watch Association in 1994.  Police Officer Jim Replogle was assigned to serve as the liaison between the association and the City of Silverton, a role he continues in to this day.

Membership
Membership is easy…simply show up at a meeting and express an interest in being part of the group.  There are many benefits to being a Silverton Block Watch Association member.  They include:

  • Meeting your neighbors
  • Crime Prevention tips
  • Knowledge of what is going on in Silverton and its future plans
  • The opportunity to hear interesting speakers
  • Participation in fundraisers that make the City a better place to live and work
  • The opportunity to meet and know your elected officials and city staff
  • The opportunity to meet and know your police officers and fire fighters
  • A free security survey of your residence or business

Association Activities
In addition to all of the benefits listed above, membership in Block Watch is fun.  The monthly meetings are a great opportunity to socialize with your neighbors and get to know people from all over Silverton.  The Association sponsors an annual fall picnic for the membership as well as a holiday party in December.  To recieve more information about the Silverton Block Watch Association call (513) 936-6233.

The Association holds fundraisers throughout the year, including the spring and fall yard sales and the Art and Wine Festival each June, held at Meier's Winery.  The events have, over the years, raised more than $90,000.  The Association has used this money to support a number of causes, including:

  • Equipment for the Police, Fire and Service Departments
  • The Summer Concerts in the Park series
  • Playground equipment for the Park
  • Explorer groups
  • Maintenance of the Silverton Train Station Museum
  • Funeral costs for murder victims
  • Beautification of the Silverton Business District
  • Other City Organizations and their events

You also have the opportunity to volunteer service to the call list.  The list is utilized to notify the community when there is a rash of vandalism, burglaries, etc.  During such scenarios, the various District Captains are contacted and provided with information pertaining to these crimes.  The Captains in turn relay the information to members in their districts.  Utilization of the call list has resulted in numerous arrests, apprehensions and conviction of criminals.
