Silverton School Receives After School Grant
Silverton Paideia Elementary School has been awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant from the Ohio Department of Education to launch an after school enrichment program in partnership with the Blue Ash YMCA.  Silverton Paideia, a Cincinnati Public School magnet program, will offer high quality programming available to all Silverton School students every day after school.  TheCincyAfterSchool program at Silverton will be headed by Amy Gryzybowski, an experience teacher with a masters degree in elementary reading.

As part of the CincyAfterSchool network of agencies offering after school programs at CPS schools, Silverton and the Blue Ash YMCA will offer daily extended day enrichment and tutoring for students in kindergarten through 6th grade.  Especially popular classes include yoga, hip-hop, karate and hands-on science.  In response to the demand for foreign language, the Cincinnati Spanish Academy will be offering Spanish language instruction taught by native speakers.  Through a partnership with the Kennedy Heights Arts Center and Women Writing for (a) Change, the Silverton students will have the opportunity to explore their creativity with guidance from professional artists and published authors.

The 21st Century grant and other funding developed by the Blue Ash YMCA will enable students enrolled at Silverton School to participate in the daily programming without cost.  The after school partnership is part of the Cincinnati Public Schools initiative to develop all schools as community learning centers to serve the students, their families, and the neighborhood during and beyond the school day and year round.  For more information please contact Amy Grzybowski at agrzybowski@cincinnatiymca.org.

City Awarded Tree City USA Status
The City of Silverton's Urban Forestry Board, since its inception in November 2006, worked diligently for Silverton to be recognized as a Tree City USA. The fruits of their labor were realized on April 24, 2008 at a ceremony in Oakwood, Ohio where Silverton was awarded its Tree City USA designation. In addition to the Tree City USA status the Urban Forestry Board has created short and long term goals to direct the development and preservation of Silverton's Urban Forest; resulting in the removal of hazardous trees, replanting of appropriate trees in regard to location and educating the citizenry in order to become better stewards of our forest. Residents interested in participating in Silverton's Urban Forestry program should contact the City at 936-6240.
